Netflix is now available in Cuba: A nice marketing move

Cuba

Today Netflix has announced its service is available in Cuba. Now the famous streaming tv will be viewed in the “Isla Bonita”.

Netflix is one of the first USA business to take advantage of the new law between Cuba and USA. The problem is that right now an internet connection is barely available and just the 5% of population has internet access. Therefor, if you want to connect, you have to pay (a lot) and find a hotel. The recent news about the “defrosting” of the relationship between USA and Cuba are opening new businesses opportunities from both sides.

One of the first thing that will be improved on the island is the internet connection to facilitate the communication and the setup of the businesses. In fact, by the end of 2015 will be opened about 200 new internet cafe.

Ok internet is the first problem.

Here’s the second. Right now Netflix pricing is 7.99 USD a month and the average monthly salary in Cuba is about 15.00 USD a month. So it’s even more difficult for a cuban to pay a monthly service!

Why?

So why Netflix decided to open a market when right now the market is not ready for it? Simple. It’s a great branding and marketing move. Being one of the first american tech company to open toward the Island is a great sign of innovation and development. Also, since the topic Cuba, is very trending right now, it brings the news across all the major media websites.

Also, we are not talking about the opening of a representative office in the island, just a virtual unlock, which is very easy to do.

The Netflix move is definitely another reason for Americans and Cubans to get closer and touch with hands one of the first benefit of the reconciliation.

So enjoy Netflix Cubans!
